Fashion and Teens - Week Four
Susan Antonelli talks about the high fashion she sees when she picks her granddaughters up from school. She say she see teenagers with Louis Vuitton, Coach, and Fendi bags. Susan also goes on and talks about how her granddaughters wear North Face jackets, Uggs boots, and Hollister shirts or skirt. Susan feels that most of her granddaughters outfits cost more than hers. Another brand she talks about is Abercrombie & Fitch, she states "Abercrombie & Fitch is very important. The shirts have to have the Moose on the chest. If you've ventured into Abercrombie stores you are familiar with the outrageous prices. A simple little shirt can run you $40.00. Shopping for my grand daughters is crazy expensive I've always been frugal and very practical so although I will pick up a gift certificate from stores they shop at for the girls for Birthdays or Christmas I personally would never just put together a wardrobe for them there."

Reflection On Depression
What I learned from depression is that anyone can have depression. That depression is something that is painful to go through. Depression doesn't just come and go, it comes and stays for awhile. Medications are available for depression but most don't know that there is medications out there. The only way you will know is if you ask. Sometimes by even asking you may not know. A lot of people won't tell you that they are depressed. When you be around people and they act different then their usual self, you may want to consider talking and asking them questions. When people are depressed it is good to talk to them and let them get their feelings out. By showing depressed people that you care they will feel better about themselves. Things that I wanted to know I learned about. I learned why people become depressed. They don't feel good about themselves or they just have to much on there mind. Every second of the day they are busy no time to themselves to just sit and relax. Depression is genetic. If people in your family were diagnosed with depression you might be next inline to be diagnosed. Depression can happen at any age more common in people between the ages of 18-29, these people are at greater risk than older people over the age of 60.
I had great success on my research project. All of my research questions were answered. They were answered with answers that I wouldn't even think about. "How does one Escape Depression ?" was my question. My question was answered. Some may think they know everything about depression but do they really? By me taking the time to research the information, I found a lot on depression. When a person with depression comes to me and says "I am depressed" or "I think I'm depressed," I'm going to help them out. Being depressed is no joke. People that are depressed need help. You can't just blow people off who are depressed. Blowing them off is probably the worse thing you could for a depressed person. Now I am aware of symptoms and what people are thinking about. So if I see the symptoms occur I know not to avoid a person but to make them feel good about themselves.
After reading about depression and gathering information about depression I have learned quit a lot. Things I should be aware about, I now know what they are. Depression may seem like a boring topic but when you do a lot of research and you know people that go through this, you start to become curious. You ask yourself the unthinkable. If you can put yourself in someones shoes who is depressed wouldn't you want help? Even some medication? Or maybe just someone to talk to? So think about it what would you want?

Fashion and Teens- Week three
I feel as if fashion affect me in many ways one of the ways is that it makes me broke. When I buy things at that moment money don't matter but when I leave the store and get home and calculate sometimes I realize that I over spent. I always say that I buy clothes and stay up with fashion because I look at it as a hobby, but deep down inside I think I do it just to keep up with the "Jones". Since I was younger my mother kept me well dressed we stayed going to he mall, I think that is what started me to let fashion have this type of affect on me. When it comes to fashion I made up this motto for me "Feel Good Gotta Look Good" this motto basically describe me and he impact of fashion in my life.

Pain in Life
Depression starts in so many different ways. From not having enough sleep to your house burning down. Not saying to avoid things you enjoy doing but relax and have some fun. I'm reading an article called Escaping Depression/Getting Out of depression, which gives me a lot of useful information on depression. By me reading this womans story I can understand depression better. As she tells her story I feel like I am a friend to her, because of all the detail she gives. Her brain was really confused. Instead of grabbing a fork, she would grab a spoon, not on purpose but becuase that was what her brain told her to do. This makes it seem like what really causes depression? How do you mess up on getting spoon over a fork?
Reading her story gave me good information on how to get out of depression. From doing all the things that you do to minimize them. You need time to yourself, time to relax. Doing so much activity makes you depressed. Less activity the less you have to wory about.(Escaping Depression/Getting Out of Depression)
By asking ones you love to help you out can help your depression. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to. Getting out your feelings can relieve some depression.

Difficulties with Depression
Postpartum depression is what it's called when women are pregnant. They go through this stage not being themselves. They become very anger, irritable , fatigue, like doesn't even matter to them anymore, and etc... Postpatum depression comes aftter "baby blues," but the "baby blues" might not always happen. I wonder if having a baby is right for me if difficulties like ths may occur.
I have read that depression is a serious illness. It affects many parts of the body. The littlest thing can make you depressed. All ages can become depressed and most don't even recognize that they are depressed. Approximately 19million Americans suffer from depression. This is a large amount of people to be depressed. I don't really hear a lot of people saying they are depressed, but maybe they just don't want to tell people that they are depressed. They may feel that people will laugh or crack jokes on what they are going through. Depression is no joke from what I have read so far. Feeling this way is probably a horrible feeling. From what I understand I have never went through this stage of depressin, but I know people who have.
People that are younger are at a higher risk of becoming depressed , between the ages of 18-29 , people that are over 60 are at a lower risk. 2% of people over the age of 65 suffer from depression because of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. Older people that suffer from this have a hard time to go through. They are already put away in nursing homes were they feel nobody cares about them anymore so being depressed just makes it even worse on them.(baby blues)
Their is treatment for this disease but many lack to retrieve the medications. Why do people fail to get the medication when it's out there? They only go to a family doctor who doesn't really deal with this type of medications stated in the World Almanac and Book of facts. Wondering to myself after I read this, What good is your family doctor if he doesn't really deal with depression cases and give you the neccessary treatment?

How do you know if your depressed ?
In the first few pages it gave reasons why people are depressed. I thought to myself that could be me. It states " If you have 5 of the 9 symptoms for 2 weeks, for most of the time, allday everyday and it changes the way you function you are depressed. Is it really true if you have the symptons you are depessed?
Symptoms include: reduce level of interest or pleasure in most or all activities, loss or gain weight, difficulty falling or staying asleep, your behavior is agitated or slowed down, fatigued or lack of energy, thoughs of worthless or extreme guilt, yor ability to think, concentrate, or make decisions is reduced, thoughts of death or suicide, and depressed moods.
In the book it is stated that black females depression is worse than black males. Approximately two-thirds of adult black women are overweight and a third of black women are obese. To me this is some interesting information. I wonder yo myself if this could happen to me because I am 50% black. A statistic that was was blackwomenshealth.com stated that african american women are 50% higher to be depressed than white women. This is something I didn't know. I really wouldn't understand why the color of your skin even your heritige would make you become a person with depression. That intrest me a lot. Me being black and white I wonder were I would fall in. Right now I feel like this topic is interesting me a lot more than before because of he interesting information that I have found. So long for now...

There isn't just one single cause for depression. Depression may either be genetic, biochemical, enviromental, and psychological facors. In found research, this illness is a disorder of the brain. In MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) test, people that are diagnosed with depression have brain scans different from people who are not depressed. The brain is esponsibe for moods, the way you think, when your sleeping, your appetite and your behavior. Neurotransmitter, which chemicals that the brain cells use to communicate, appear to be out of balance. Images found can not reveal why depression is caused.
Different types of depression can run in families that have had a history of depression. It also can happen to people without family history of depression. Researchers have indicated that depression

The Importance Of Fashion: Before The Search
I never knew the importance fashion played in teenagers lives nor did I question it until I came up with this essential question. So now I look at the importance fashion plays in teenagers life from a teenagers perspective and a reporter perspective. As a teenager there's kind of pressure to be up to date with fashion, because if your not you would be made fun of. But I don't follow fashion so I can not be made fun of, I do it because it's sort of an hobby (that cost money). I know that my reasons for following fashion is not the same for other teens. So that's what my research is mainly going to depend on other teens as myself who is into fashions and the ways it change there lives.

When Will It Be Over?
I no very little about depression, but I hear people talking about how depressed they are. Or others that have gone to doctors and stated that the doctor diagnosed them with depression but they didn't even no they were depressed. Depression can cause you to do some crazy things. I know because people I know go through it. Some tell me that when they are depressed they fget grey hairs, they start gaining weight, or not acting like there regular self. Stuff that I know about depression has all been told to me I never actually looked stuff up in the dictionary or looked it up on the computer. It's all he said she said. I would like to further my knowledge with depression.
My Essential Question is:
How does one escape depression?
Foundation Questions are:
Why are people depressed?
Is depression genetic?
What age does depression start at?
Is there medication for depression?
How does depression start?
If depression isn't fixed what could it lead to?

A Walk To Remember
A Walk to Remember was a very realistic story. It was so realistic that I once imagined I was actually jamie. I wanted what Jamie had which was the looks, voice, intelligents and light. But realistically I knew that couldnt be me. When I found out the ending I didnt want to be her anymore but then again she did die married and happy and thats somthing that I always wanted. The only thing about her I didnt want was to not being able to have children and dieing so young but, when you win some you lose some. In other words I mean something always goes wrong but something always go right. You have the good and the bad at times in life but somtimes you got to face them. I loved the character Jamie because of her always being her self and such a lady. I would one day like to meet her but I dont think that will ever come true because its young adult fiction but once again feel so real.

Staying hurt
pg 201-300
Do the character's experiences cause them to grow? If so, how?
In this book Gena has to go through change and doesn't want to accept it at first. When her bestfriend dies, she is hurt dramatically. She never thought her friend would die so soon. By this happening she learns that she is not the only one who has had a friend that has died. Growing up in a place were you have to worry if your going to wake up the next morning, is a scary feeling. When Gena bestfiend dies, she doesn't no what to do. That was the girl she went to with everything on her mind. She feels like she can't move on with her life because her best friend is gone. When she realizes that she is gone and not coming back, she has to grow up and move on with her life. By this experience happening she has to grow and learn that things happen, and that you could be at the wrong place at the wrong time. By Gena being weak at times, she realizes that it's only going to get worse if that is always on her mind.
By Gena being this weak will she grow to be maturer?

Motivation of The Streets
pg133-200
Gena a character of spunk. Is a happy person. Her characteristics remind me of a hustler's wife on a movie or real talk "On the streets." Her motivation is the streets. Just by growing up in the projects, makes her want to be out and free to be on her own. Seh couldn't live like her grandmother. Living in some broke down projects with broken windows and shallow walls she had to get out. When she would be out with her friends she new there had to be a different way of living. She wanted luxury, but how will she get that. The streets are "talking." Drug dealer's are the ones that turn her on. When she see's a drug dealer girlfriend, she sees they are treated. Why not be like them she figures. She don't want to be like them, she wants to be better. Gena want's to be known allover. Girl's have nice looking clothes, but Gena want's better looking clothes, they have jewerly, Gena want's better jewerly. Gena was motivated to get out the broke down projects and to live in a better lifestyle. She didn't get there right away but she got there eventually. Gena had it all. The new cars, the house, the coats, the jewerly, you name it Gena got's it. Livinf like she did wasn't the way she wanted. She needed herself a "Hustler," a well being paid hustler at that. She was known as Qua's girl soon later. Being on top was her goal, and she did it. Coming to a suprise to her but she did. But why would she want someone that makes money the illegal way rather than someone that makes money the right way?

My Character Kaninda seems like he is a real person. It seems as if I can feel his pain and grief. I know that I can't relate to Kaninda predicament but I know others that can. Such as the children in Sierra Leone who were drugged and forced to amputate limbs of people in their own communities even their own families. Kaninda is motivated by ethnic hatred and the desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and sister. This oversimplifies the thoughts of child soldiers in Africa. Over 100,000 children in recent years have been kidnapped and forcibly enrolled into conflicts in Angola, Congo, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. They make up over half of the fighting forces in these countries. As children they are considered cheap, expendable, and easily forced into mindless obedience. Do you believe that children should be forced into war for those reasons mentioned in the passage?

GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY BY MARY MONROE
Pages..162-196
The character Annette seem very real and believable. The only reason y i say Annette is real and believable because she becomes so emotional when she talks about her life.Far as what her family been through and what she been through in her personal life, and how she over came it. I can't relate to annette in any way because she think shse very ugly she doesn't have any type of self confendence what so ever. She also wanted to be someone she wasn't to make friends and keep them. I have too much pride in my self and to much confendence. I personally think every one is cute in there own way. Annette is a very sweet, smart girl thats what made her looks not even matter. But she didn't see it that way. I also haven't been through the things she been through. But annette do remind me of a friend i use to have. She wanted to be just like me she did anything to get and keep my attention. She lied about the things she did the people she talked to in order to fit in. The girl also kept up alot of drama. she wanted to b center of attention for what reason I don't know. But in relatildy all she had ta do was be herself in order to fit in..

A Hustler's Fantasy
pg 1 - pg 132
True To The Game by Terri Woods has this character named Gena that has to be the popular girl, that everyone knows of. If Gena isn't the popular one then she feels miserable. Gena seems like a real and believable character. You got the kinds of people who don't "fit in" in school, at their jobs, and maybe even their own family. Then you got the popular kids who have to be seen and shown off. It may not be just from their prettiest, or even their intelligence, it may just be having a relationship with the biggest drug dealer in the city. Quadir, is the drug dealers name. To him Gena is the one. All the other girl's don't mean nothing to him as he say's. He makes a lot of money. Everyone wants someone that makes money. Quadir makes it the illegal way. That isn't always the way to go necessarly there is other ways to make money. THE RIGHT WAY.
In Quadir's eyes, he's been looking for Gena for awhile. He has secrets but doesn't tell Gena. Gena is suppose to be his girlfriend, why he doesn't tell her things, things that she should know before she starts falling in love with him. Gena has a family and so does Quadir. They abandon what they have to go on a vacation. Isn't quite a vacation when things get hectic on the other part of the city. If you were Gena would you think about the consequences that you would have if you started a relationship with a drug dealer?

True TO THE GAME
My impressions of the book so far is that it's a good book. True to the Game is thrilling and exciting. You would never think of what happened would have happened. How the author wrote the book it helps you to get into the book and help you understand he book better. By the author writing how she does, you can really put yourself into the characters place and there situations. The book isn't about older people that are out of my range but kids that are in my age bracket. By the kids being in my age bracket it helps you relate to the kids and there situations. I can't relate to the book but people I know can relate to the book . Page after page it gets more and more exciting. I can't wait to flip the next page to see what happens next. This book is better than I thought it was going to be. The book really tells the truth about the real "Players" in the book. What the people in the real world on the street do.

Group Response
We think that people read this genre because the books that are young adult literature can appear to us to be true. Even though they are fiction books they still feel like they are real. Young adult literature fiction books are basically going on in everyday life even though they are not true, you can compare them to real situations.
It's humanity that it provides is there heart and their brain. Some people can relate to fiction books. When they see a title or read the back of a book they might feel like that is the right book for them. There may be a young adult book that might not catch their eye right away but when they read the book the might like it.

One of the conflicts that happened in my book that relate to my life was when Sam had to meet his son Mikey after school to help him through the snow. The blizzard in 1977 was so bad that Mikey couldnt really walk through it so he feel and alot of snow fail on top of him. So his father came to his rescue and pulled him out the snow and took him home. The same thing happened to me in the fourth grade after school when I was walking home. The only thing different is my mother didnt pull me out the snow but she draged me home.

I am very puzzeled and confused because I feel that maybe Mikey's parents could of explained sex better to his child than he did and told him how bad it was and how un-safe it was for a boy his age. If they would of told him that maybe Mikey would of said no to the little girl and told her some new information she didnt know about to prevent her from doing the same so young. Im also puzzeled and confused because I wanted to know where were the parents when all this was happening and thinking of if it was really the parent's fault.

When you read a book do the character seem real and believable? Are you able to relate all their predicaments? And do they ever start to remind you of yourself? My answer is yes i feel their is actually a real and believable person because I be so into the story or book that I feel that the whole book is real. The charater Sam diffinently reminds me of myself because I feel I can relate to him such as children life responsibilities and even family.

This novel is about how a little boy is being raised in a society where he really does know anything and/or how to take on challenges in his life.
This story cought my attention because this young boy named Mikey is being faced with so many challenges at a young age. i have been faced with many challenges in my life were i wanted to give up. but what really inspired me was how mikey this little boy never gave up. he showed me that things happen for a reason, and that you should never give up because you giving up just shows that your a failer. I dont want to have to grow up like his mom telling my children i was a failer

It all started when she was younger and older men started falling for her. She was young so she aint really know what to do. When she had a boyfriend she had to sleep with him, if not they she felt not loved by him. When her boyfriends would leave her because they found another girls. She didn't care,as long as she got to have sex with them it was o.k. When she was in the 9th grade she got pregnant, but it wasn't by her boyfriend Victor. Jessica was a slezy girl. Having sex was always on her mind. The boys she told that they were the father of her child didn't take no responsibility to take care of no child.
When your 14 nobody wants to take care of no children. Kids are into clubbing, going out, having fun, they aren't ready for no big responsibilities at that age. You see it now out on the street girls getting pregnant not just having one or two kids but 3 or 4.
The characters in this book are believable. I can relate to their predicaments. The extent that this book reminds me of characters is quite well and I can relate too.

Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer Pages: 1-144
is pretty alienated. It's a nonfiction book, and since I haven't
summed it up yet in a previous response, it's about a kid who is
searching for meaning in life and seeks this meaning by exploring.
At the beginning of the book we find out that he ends up dying in the
middle of Alaska to exposure.
Even though I think I'm supposed to, I'm having a really hard time
identifying with the main character, Chris McCandless. I look at
the cover and there's this picture of Emile Hirsch portraying
McCandless. He's a good looking kid, and he's kind of sitting in this
"top of the world" type dominant pose. The author seems to really
identify with the character, and spends a couple of chapters relating
his own similar experiences. And McCandless is seemingly the rugged,
individualistic antihero that Americans celebrate.
But, I can't get into him, and I think it's because I'm a parent
now. I see the way this kid abandoned his parents, went off into the
middle of nowhere, took chances, didn't write home, and espoused his
theories on the way life works to whomever would listen, and I'm
like, "dude...call your mom, dad and sister. They're worried sick."
The kid is kind of portrayed as this spiritual, deep Thoreau quoting
prophetic figure, but he just strikes me as naive and self centered.
I don't know what I'd do if I was his parent. I would be devastated
if my son took off after graduating college and just disappeared.
It's really rather sad.
(By the way, if you're wondering, this response is to the 7th bullet
under character. The total length of this response is 279 words. I
summed up the book to start because I figured you'd need that
information, but then I really tried to stick to talking about
whether or not I identified with the main character and why.)

Random Family
I like about the book is that Jessica and Cesar are my age, so I can relate to what is going on. It gives in detail how things have happened so far. How Jessica doesn't feel loved by anyone. By her saying this it makes me want to get into the book even more.
Your 1st Post!
first post will be a kind of introductory thing. Here's what I'd like each
of you to write (make sure it is under your own display name):
1. In 2-3 sentences, give us a taste of the book. What is the title? Who
is the author? What is the "gist"? (It's about a girl who...)
2. In a separate paragraph of 2-3 sentences, finish this sentence: One
thing I like (or don't like) about the book so far is...

Welcome
blogosphere (the world of weblogs, according to my widget dictionary).
I'm going to send you more meaty information in the next few days
(right now I'm testing out the "mail to blogger" option I told some
of you about today).
But for now, I want to talk to you about grammar and conventions.
These are blogs for my English class, and I expect you to follow the
rules of standard English as best as you can. Some of our previous
rm305 blog discussions were replete with mistake after mistake. You
may IM your friends and write on Myspace one way, but on these blogs
we are going to assume a more academic diction.
Thanks for the help. If you have any questions, let me know.
