Fashion and Teens - Week Four

I am now in my in my fourth and final week of researching and I went back to the internet to get some research that I believe helped me answer my essential question "Should fashion play such am important role in teens life". While doing my research I came across this article and it was written by a women name Susan Antonelli. She talks from an mother and grandmother point of view about fashion and how much teens spend on it this is what attracted me to her article.

Susan Antonelli talks about the high fashion she sees when she picks her granddaughters up from school. She say she see teenagers with Louis
Vuitton, Coach, and Fendi bags. Susan also goes on and talks about how her granddaughters wear North Face jackets, Uggs boots, and Hollister shirts or skirt. Susan feels that most of her granddaughters outfits cost more than hers. Another brand she talks about is Abercrombie & Fitch, she states "Abercrombie & Fitch is very important. The shirts have to have the Moose on the chest. If you've ventured into Abercrombie stores you are familiar with the outrageous prices. A simple little shirt can run you $40.00. Shopping for my grand daughters is crazy expensive I've always been frugal and very practical so although I will pick up a gift certificate from stores they shop at for the girls for Birthdays or Christmas I personally would never just put together a wardrobe for them there."

Reflection On Depression

When the word depression comes to me I automatically think what is going to happen next in your life. Depression is something that needs to be taking care of. Nobody should have to deal with this. Everyone lives are not perfect but when something happens or goes wrong it needs to be fixed somehow.

What I learned from depression is that anyone can have depression. That depression is something that is painful to go through. Depression doesn't just come and go, it comes and stays for awhile. Medications are available for depression but most don't know that there is medications out there. The only way you will know is if you ask. Sometimes by even asking you may not know. A lot of people won't tell you that they are depressed. When you be around people and they act different then their usual self, you may want to consider talking and asking them questions. When people are depressed it is good to talk to them and let them get their feelings out. By showing depressed people that you care they will feel better about themselves. Things that I wanted to know I learned about. I learned why people become depressed. They don't feel good about themselves or they just have to much on there mind. Every second of the day they are busy no time to themselves to just sit and relax. Depression is genetic. If people in your family were diagnosed with depression you might be next inline to be diagnosed. Depression can happen at any age more common in people between the ages of 18-29, these people are at greater risk than older people over the age of 60.

I had great success on my research project. All of my research questions were answered. They were answered with answers that I wouldn't even think about. "How does one Escape Depression ?" was my question. My question was answered. Some may think they know everything about depression but do they really? By me taking the time to research the information, I found a lot on depression. When a person with depression comes to me and says "I am depressed" or "I think I'm depressed," I'm going to help them out. Being depressed is no joke. People that are depressed need help. You can't just blow people off who are depressed. Blowing them off is probably the worse thing you could for a depressed person. Now I am aware of symptoms and what people are thinking about. So if I see the symptoms occur I know not to avoid a person but to make them feel good about themselves.

After reading about depression and gathering information about depression I have learned quit a lot. Things I should be aware about, I now know what they are. Depression may seem like a boring topic but when you do a lot of research and you know people that go through this, you start to become curious. You ask yourself the unthinkable. If you can put yourself in someones shoes who is depressed wouldn't you want help? Even some medication? Or maybe just someone to talk to? So think about it what would you want?

Is it better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

Yesterday I went to the Womens Health Center at Childrens Hospitial. This time I talked to another GYN/OB named Doctor Nezzi. She stated when I asked her "Is it better to be a Nurse Practitioner or a Doctor?" that its clearly a NP. I asked why and she quote " The NP's have a better lifestyle, make good pay and dont have to go to school as long as she did.". She also said she's at work most of the time and dont get a chance to really relax. I told her I was not sure which one to become and then she told me to go for it and follow my heart.

Fashion and Teens- Week three

I am now in my third week of research, I didn't really do any research this week. This week I decide to ask myself one of my foundation question "How does fashion affect you". For the last three weeks I asked everyone else input on fashion in the teenage world but I skipped myself. I had to ask myself this question, this is the question that stuck out at me the most and I knew that I would be able to talk about it with emphasis.

I feel as if fashion affect me in many ways one of the ways is that it makes me broke. When I buy things at that moment money don't matter but when I leave the store and get home and calculate sometimes I realize that I over spent. I always say that I buy clothes and stay up with fashion because I look at it as a hobby, but deep down inside I think I do it just to keep up with the "Jones". Since I was younger my mother kept me well dressed we stayed going to he mall, I think that is what started me to let fashion have this type of affect on me. When it comes to fashion I made up this motto for me "Feel Good Gotta Look Good" this motto basically describe me and he impact of fashion in my life.

Pain in Life

As I sit down and think about how many people are really depressed in the world today, it hurts to know that there is people really depressed out there. I think why don't they get help? Why don't they want to be out of something that doesn't have to happen to them? A lot of questions I ask myself about this topic.

Depression starts in so many different ways. From not having enough sleep to your house burning down. Not saying to avoid things you enjoy doing but relax and have some fun. I'm reading an article called Escaping Depression/Getting Out of depression, which gives me a lot of useful information on depression. By me reading this womans story I can understand depression better. As she tells her story I feel like I am a friend to her, because of all the detail she gives. Her brain was really confused. Instead of grabbing a fork, she would grab a spoon, not on purpose but becuase that was what her brain told her to do. This makes it seem like what really causes depression? How do you mess up on getting spoon over a fork?

Reading her story gave me good information on how to get out of depression. From doing all the things that you do to minimize them. You need time to yourself, time to relax. Doing so much activity makes you depressed. Less activity the less you have to wory about.(Escaping Depression/Getting Out of Depression)

By asking ones you love to help you out can help your depression. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to. Getting out your feelings can relieve some depression.

Is It better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

There was an interview I did on a GYN/OB doctor at the womens health department at Childrens Hopitial a week a go. I asked her some basic questions then I asked her the real questions I wanted to know in order for me and the other people out there to suceed as she once did. Questins like...

Crystalyn: How long have you been a doctor?

Doctor Schillen: Almost 6 years in September.

Crystalyn: Do you like your job?

Doctor Schillen: I like my job but hate it at times.

Crystalyn: Why do you hate your job at times?

Doctor Schillen: Because it interfear in my everyday life at times. I dont like to really take vacations because I be to peranoed that one of my patients will have there babies and I wont there for them like Im suppose.

Crystalyn: Do you love your patients?

Doctor Schillen: Sometimes the patients are nice and like to open up to you but then some and ignorant and dont even want to show up for appointents and dont care about themselves or there babies at all.

Crystalyn: What are your salaries looking like a year?

Doctor Schillen: I've been a Doctor for d*** there 6 years and im doing great making 200,000 a year.

Crystalyn: Is it better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

Doctor Schillen: Normal life wise a NP but a life like mine with no kids and no husband a DOCTOR.

Is It better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

Doctors are a very important part of life. When your weak or dieing they know exactly what to say and how to say it. They also know what to do and know whats more helpful. Nurse practitioners understand you more and make you feel as if there a regular person your talking to and listen to your business but also keep it confedental. I have a GYN that talks to me and let me know how my body is doing. I also have a NP that tells me what I need to stop doing and reminds me to always be safe and use protection but, the funny thing is I never get tierd of hearing it. Thats something I can see myself doing, telling the young ladies to be safe or save them selfs. But then again cant you do the same as being a Doctor?

Fashion and Teens- Week two

I am now in my second week of research I am still not close to getting the answer to my essential question " Should fashion play such an important role in teens life". During this week I been on the Internet researching, trying to find the answers to my foundation questions. This week I learned how to get accurate information from the Internet, by using certain words that narrow down my search to what I am mainly searching for. Using these new tools I came across this interesting article that talked about how teenagers express there personalities and one of the most effective forms of self-expression is through there clothes. Then it went on to how teen fashion is a huge part of the fashion industry because there are so many choices when it comes to teen fashion. Picking a specific style of ten fashion is nearly impossible. After all there are so many different styles of clothing out there that can be used to reflect different styles of personalities. I agreed with this article alot it kind off made me understand the way us teenagers look at fashion from another point of view

Is it better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

Doctors have a lot of respect for there carriers and so do Nurse Practitioners. But the NP's don't have as much knowledge as doctors unfortunately. Theres many reasons why you need to decide in a couple months what's the best carrier for you. In this case you should already know who, what, when where, how and why your going for. You cant be so sure if your choice is what you really want to do in college. The reason being is you might just be wasting your time and money. People around my age just leaving High School dont have it like that and who really just want to waste money. If anything young people like myself want to own more and more of it. And college is where the money is...

Difficulties with Depression

What do you think when someone tells you " I am depressed? " I think to myself how and why are the first things I ask myself. What happened in your life that made you become depressed. Depression is no joke. I worry when some one tells me that they are feeling depessed especially a pregnant woman.

Postpartum depression is what it's called when women are pregnant. They go through this stage not being themselves. They become very anger, irritable , fatigue, like doesn't even matter to them anymore, and etc... Postpatum depression comes aftter "baby blues," but the "baby blues" might not always happen. I wonder if having a baby is right for me if difficulties like ths may occur.

I have read that depression is a serious illness. It affects many parts of the body. The littlest thing can make you depressed. All ages can become depressed and most don't even recognize that they are depressed. Approximately 19million Americans suffer from depression. This is a large amount of people to be depressed. I don't really hear a lot of people saying they are depressed, but maybe they just don't want to tell people that they are depressed. They may feel that people will laugh or crack jokes on what they are going through. Depression is no joke from what I have read so far. Feeling this way is probably a horrible feeling. From what I understand I have never went through this stage of depressin, but I know people who have.

People that are younger are at a higher risk of becoming depressed , between the ages of 18-29 , people that are over 60 are at a lower risk. 2% of people over the age of 65 suffer from depression because of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. Older people that suffer from this have a hard time to go through. They are already put away in nursing homes were they feel nobody cares about them anymore so being depressed just makes it even worse on them.(baby blues)

Their is treatment for this disease but many lack to retrieve the medications. Why do people fail to get the medication when it's out there? They only go to a family doctor who doesn't really deal with this type of medications stated in the World Almanac and Book of facts. Wondering to myself after I read this, What good is your family doctor if he doesn't really deal with depression cases and give you the neccessary treatment?

How do you know if your depressed ?

I sit at home and wonder to myself am I one of the millions that are depressed ? Sometimes I really wonder. I'm reading this book called " Black Pain" Real Talk For When There's Nowhere to go but up by Terrie M Williams, this is one of the reasons why I came up with the topic of depression. The book is about black people on their situations in life that make them depressed, why they are depressed and etc...

In the first few pages it gave reasons why people are depressed. I thought to myself that could be me. It states " If you have 5 of the 9 symptoms for 2 weeks, for most of the time, allday everyday and it changes the way you function you are depressed. Is it really true if you have the symptons you are depessed?

Symptoms include: reduce level of interest or pleasure in most or all activities, loss or gain weight, difficulty falling or staying asleep, your behavior is agitated or slowed down, fatigued or lack of energy, thoughs of worthless or extreme guilt, yor ability to think, concentrate, or make decisions is reduced, thoughts of death or suicide, and depressed moods.

In the book it is stated that black females depression is worse than black males. Approximately two-thirds of adult black women are overweight and a third of black women are obese. To me this is some interesting information. I wonder yo myself if this could happen to me because I am 50% black. A statistic that was was blackwomenshealth.com stated that african american women are 50% higher to be depressed than white women. This is something I didn't know. I really wouldn't understand why the color of your skin even your heritige would make you become a person with depression. That intrest me a lot. Me being black and white I wonder were I would fall in. Right now I feel like this topic is interesting me a lot more than before because of he interesting information that I have found. So long for now...

Is it better to be a Doctor or a Nurse Practitioner?

To start my search, I decided to Google "Nurse Practitioner Salary" to see if their salaries were similar to that of a doctor.I found that there actually are indeed doctors that make the same as Nurse Practitioners. I found my information from the web that showed many charts of the NP's salaries. And then I found that some of NP's make 80,000 a year and some of doctors make the same but doctor really make over 100,000 a year. Money is definently a focus that got me interested in this subject Im writing on. But the question is will I be happy just having alot of money. Im not sure if my perspectives are right to become a doctor reason being being a doctor is hard work but NP's dont have to work as hard. Should a person be able to allow themselves to be lazy or am I really not lazy for being so protected of my choices.

There's so many questions to ask but so little time to get answers.

Fashion and Teens - Week One

As I started my search I knew there were a few basic questions I needed to answer. One of my questions that I had ask was "How much money do you spend on fashion in a month". I got the answer to this question from most of my classmates and friends. When I ask them the question many of them didn't know off hand, so i got a calculator and a piece of paper and we added everything up. More than half of the people I did this with price was more than $250.00. After everyone saw how much they spend on fashion a month they started to get second thoughts on is staying up with fashion worth as much as we pay. After I calculated everyone else prices I did my own and my price was $400.00. When i start to analyze my situation i realize that i spend as much money some people spend on rent on fashion. I was kind of surprise at how much money I spend to stay up with fashion. I still don't know why teens like myself let fashion play a huge role in there lives but I think that I am going to get a little closer to the answer in this next month.

Is it better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

In life with certain themes sometimes you have to play it safe. In this issue theres a determination in these careers because you have to be able to know what you can handle. So in this case I have researched what would be better. Including the salaries and info from my reseach on google i have found that some doctors and Nurse Practitioner make the same amount. But I have also read in a magazine called the PEOPLE actually wish they didnt become a doctor but just a Nurse Practitioner because they dont have a normal life. The Doctor was not able to have children or a family or even get married because she had to dedicate her life and time to her job of being a Doctor. I didnt expect to actually read something like. I was only expecting to read how much they like it, how great the money was and also how well they are respected!!

Is it better to be a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner?

In life you go threw many experiences day by day. And every experience you have brings you closer to getting to know yourself and what you want to actually become in life.Theres many careers and jobs out there to fit a persons perpective. But theres only one Career that I adore and I have'nt even tried it yet. Me knowing myself so well I can feel how much I would want to become a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner. The question is which one would I be able to handle and actually fit my perpective's and standards.

I started to want to become a nurse when my mom graduated from school to be a LPN. I felt like she didnt make enough money for me so I figured to become someting higher, yes thats right a Nurse Practitioner. I loved when my NP always talked to me about my body and tell whats not healthy and what is and always give me good advice so thats when I just wanted to do something like that.

Kaleida Health Center 4/17/08

Which career would better fit you in life?

Which career is more safe?

Which career gives you the most respect?

Which career shows you the most reality?

Which career is most common?
I started my research on depression with my first question What are the causes of depression? From this website I learned that depression runs in families that can be inherited. It comes generation after generation, but also can occur with no family history of depression. Depression can be caused from a death, illnes, relationships, financial problems, or a major change in life that is unexpected. Your living enviroment and how you live can cause you to become in a depressive stage. Women are twice as much as men to become depressd. A woman that is pregnant and is stressing during her pregnancy can increase her baby to be depressive when the child is an adult
(Panzarino).

There isn't just one single cause for depression. Depression may either be genetic, biochemical, enviromental, and psychological facors. In found research, this illness is a disorder of the brain. In MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) test, people that are diagnosed with depression have brain scans different from people who are not depressed. The brain is esponsibe for moods, the way you think, when your sleeping, your appetite and your behavior. Neurotransmitter, which chemicals that the brain cells use to communicate, appear to be out of balance. Images found can not reveal why depression is caused.
Different types of depression can run in families that have had a history of depression. It also can happen to people without family history of depression. Researchers have indicated that depression

The Importance Of Fashion: Before The Search

I became interested in the topic because many teens as myself let fashion play such an important role in there life's. For Example Michael Jordan comes out with a pair of sneakers every month about 6 out of every 10 students get them month after month. It's not that they need them, they just get them to stay up with fashion. I picked this topic because every since I could remember fashion played a huge role in my life. I always try to get the newest sneakers and the most expensive jeans and shirts. But at the end of the day I be broke trying to live a celebrity life style or as teenagers say "By getting fly". I wanted to research this topic so I can understand why does fashion play a huge role in teenagers lives.

I never knew the importance fashion played in teenagers lives nor did I question it until I came up with this essential question. So now I look at the importance fashion plays in teenagers life from a teenagers perspective and a reporter perspective. As a teenager there's kind of pressure to be up to date with fashion, because if your not you would be made fun of. But I don't follow fashion so I can not be made fun of, I do it because it's sort of an hobby (that cost money). I know that my reasons for following fashion is not the same for other teens. So that's what my research is mainly going to depend on other teens as myself who is into fashions and the ways it change there lives.

My Essential Question: Should fashion play such an important role in teens life?
My Foundation Questions: Does it?
In what ways?
What do people say?
Most money spent on fashion?
Money spent on fashion in a month?
How does fashion affect you?

When Will It Be Over?

I became interested in this topic because i'm reading a book that is interesting to me. The book is called Black Pain, Real Talk For When There's Nowhere To Go But Up, by Terrie M. Williams. This book talks about how people are depressed. By people telling their stories makes me wonder how do they come out of depression? how do they avoid it? I really wonder how people think what goes on in their minds for them to be depressed. By me knowing people that are depessed makes me wonder. Some of my close friends go through this stage and sometimes don't even know it. By them being depressedit makes them do some crazy things. Things that I woould'nt even consider. I feel helpless when people I no come to me and ask me for help. If I could just take them to a doctors and get them help, but most are scared. I would like to know so much about depression. The more I know about depression, the more I can help out my friends or people that come to me.

I no very little about depression, but I hear people talking about how depressed they are. Or others that have gone to doctors and stated that the doctor diagnosed them with depression but they didn't even no they were depressed. Depression can cause you to do some crazy things. I know because people I know go through it. Some tell me that when they are depressed they fget grey hairs, they start gaining weight, or not acting like there regular self. Stuff that I know about depression has all been told to me I never actually looked stuff up in the dictionary or looked it up on the computer. It's all he said she said. I would like to further my knowledge with depression.

My Essential Question is:
How does one escape depression?
Foundation Questions are:
Why are people depressed?
Is depression genetic?
What age does depression start at?
Is there medication for depression?
How does depression start?
If depression isn't fixed what could it lead to?

A Walk To Remember

Page 190-210

A Walk to Remember was a very realistic story. It was so realistic that I once imagined I was actually jamie. I wanted what Jamie had which was the looks, voice, intelligents and light. But realistically I knew that couldnt be me. When I found out the ending I didnt want to be her anymore but then again she did die married and happy and thats somthing that I always wanted. The only thing about her I didnt want was to not being able to have children and dieing so young but, when you win some you lose some. In other words I mean something always goes wrong but something always go right. You have the good and the bad at times in life but somtimes you got to face them. I loved the character Jamie because of her always being her self and such a lady. I would one day like to meet her but I dont think that will ever come true because its young adult fiction but once again feel so real.

Little Soldier By: Bernard Ashley

Kaninda Evolves
Pg: 168-226

The main character Kaninda made a choice that had moral implications make as when he tries to make a new beginning in East London but then he realize it is almost as violent as the life he has left behind. Kaninda realize that this gang war is petty warfare, he knows it is nothing like the real thing. Kaninda finally gets the help he needs. But ironically it comes from his sworn enemy, the Yusulu boy refugee helps him to see that revenge will not bring back his dead parents and sister, and that in tribal conflict all sides are losers. Being in Kaninda's shoe's I don't believe that I would of have been able to forgive the Yusulu refugee and let him show me that revenge wouldn't bring back his parents and sister. Because my family means the world to me and I wouldn't be able to let anyone get away with the murder of my family. Would you have had forgave the Yusulu refugee for what his tribe did to your family or would you have saw where the Yusulu refugee was coming from?

Motivation of The Streets

TRUE TO THE GAME By TERRI WOODS
pg133-200

Gena
a character of spunk. Is a happy person. Her characteristics remind me of a hustler's wife on a movie or real talk "On the streets." Her motivation is the streets. Just by growing up in the projects, makes her want to be out and free to be on her own. Seh couldn't live like her grandmother. Living in some broke down projects with broken windows and shallow walls she had to get out. When she would be out with her friends she new there had to be a different way of living. She wanted luxury, but how will she get that. The streets are "talking." Drug dealer's are the ones that turn her on. When she see's a drug dealer girlfriend, she sees they are treated. Why not be like them she figures. She don't want to be like them, she wants to be better. Gena want's to be known allover. Girl's have nice looking clothes, but Gena want's better looking clothes, they have jewerly, Gena want's better jewerly. Gena was motivated to get out the broke down projects and to live in a better lifestyle. She didn't get there right away but she got there eventually. Gena had it all. The new cars, the house, the coats, the jewerly, you name it Gena got's it. Livinf like she did wasn't the way she wanted. She needed herself a "Hustler," a well being paid hustler at that. She was known as Qua's girl soon later. Being on top was her goal, and she did it. Coming to a suprise to her but she did. But why would she want someone that makes money the illegal way rather than someone that makes money the right way?

Little Soldier By: Bernard Ashley

Kaninda's Revenge Pg: 125-160

Now I am kind of deep in my story and conflict is now taking place and it got me thinking whats going to happen next. Some conflicts that Kaninda is facing is that he don't want to be in Europe he wants to escape back to Africa so he can be with is tribe ( Tribe Kibu). So he can take revenge on Tribe Yusulu, the tribe that killed his parents and little sister. So competent and single minded as Kaninda is I feel that he can carry this out. Kaninda then hooks up with this gang in London, that he believes will help him get back home. Kaninda is now running with this gang doing mischief things but still feel the grief from the murder of his family so Kaninda breaks away, because he feels that doing those things are not making him a better person nor bringing him closer to home. Then a Yusulu refugee arrive at Kaninda comprehensive school, and now Kaninda knows that he must kill this boy before he leaves London. Do you think Kaninda should kill the Yusulu refugee to revenge his family death?

Little Soldier By: Bernard Ashley

Life in Africa Pg: 1-100

My Character Kaninda seems like he is a real person. It seems as if I can feel his pain and grief. I know that I can't relate to Kaninda predicament but I know others that can. Such as the children in Sierra Leone who were drugged and forced to amputate limbs of people in their own communities even their own families. Kaninda is motivated by ethnic hatred and the desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and sister. This oversimplifies the thoughts of child soldiers in Africa. Over 100,000 children in recent years have been kidnapped and forcibly enrolled into conflicts in Angola, Congo, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. They make up over half of the fighting forces in these countries. As children they are considered cheap, expendable, and easily forced into mindless obedience. Do you believe that children should be forced into war for those reasons mentioned in the passage?

A Walk To Remember

In my book A Walk To Remember there were a certain part of the story that made me think more open thoughts and also made me feel a little uncomfortable. The reason being is because the young lady Jamie whom I conclude died from having cancer. It made me uncomfortable because cancer always ran in family so now Im a little scared about my life because my grandmother just cought breast cancer not to long ago and is fighting it as hard as she can. My aunt dotors also just found a tomer in her head that hey caught a couple of weeks ago that could of start cancer if they never had found it. So I feel that this book has giving me another sign to go and get checked out for cancer and has made me ver aware of my health, life and decisions.

A Walk To Remember

In most adult fiction books it cause there characters to grow. In this case it do make both my characters to grow in a unbelieveable way. The couple experience was so special and pure that they didnt care what people said or did to there relationship they just loved one another and put each other first. It caused the young man to grow into a nice, careing sucessful gentleman from a bad, ignorant unpredictable little boy. With out her he definently went down the wrong path and most likely in jail. with out him she would jus been a young lady with no life having no fun before her time was up to leave this earth. He helped her fine the more down to earth and funnier person than the sadity, smart stock up young lady. I understood there relationship alot because what they had was special and they looked up to each other and became a couple to marriage and united as one.

A Walk To Remember

The book I am reading is called A Walk To Remember which happens to be a Young Adult Fiction book written by Ncholas Sparks. This book was basically about true love that you would never throught become real. I can relate to this book because it has to do with people my age falling in love and growing mature and learning more from being with that person. I once had a boyfriend that grew more mature from us just being together and sharing each ohters throuhts, feelings and smarts. The only difference fro this book and my life is he didnt die and we didnt get married but, theres still the future to come.

Little Soldier By: Bernard Ashley

My impressions of my book so far is that it should get interesting I have a feeling that it would be a good book. My main character Kaninda is from Lasai in Africa. His family was killed by an rival tribe the(Yusulu Tribe). He is now being held captive in London where he tries to do everything to escape so he can take revenge with the Kibu Rebels. As I read more I want to see how Kaninda revenge his family and escape. From reading so far Kaninda seems like an determenied soldier. Getting to know Kaninda will be a real test because he seems as if he's stubborn. While reading I also sense a little foreshawdowing on Kaninda joining another gang so I'm also looking forward to that.

GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY BY MARY MONROE

Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments? To what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?

Pages..162-196

The character Annette seem very real and believable. The only reason y i say Annette is real and believable because she becomes so emotional when she talks about her life.Far as what her family been through and what she been through in her personal life, and how she over came it. I can't relate to annette in any way because she think shse very ugly she doesn't have any type of self confendence what so ever. She also wanted to be someone she wasn't to make friends and keep them. I have too much pride in my self and to much confendence. I personally think every one is cute in there own way. Annette is a very sweet, smart girl thats what made her looks not even matter. But she didn't see it that way. I also haven't been through the things she been through. But annette do remind me of a friend i use to have. She wanted to be just like me she did anything to get and keep my attention. She lied about the things she did the people she talked to in order to fit in. The girl also kept up alot of drama. she wanted to b center of attention for what reason I don't know. But in relatildy all she had ta do was be herself in order to fit in..

A Hustler's Fantasy

True To The Game By Terri Woods
pg 1 - pg 132

True To The Game by Terri Woods has this character named Gena that has to be the popular girl, that everyone knows of. If Gena isn't the popular one then she feels miserable. Gena seems like a real and believable character. You got the kinds of people who don't "fit in" in school, at their jobs, and maybe even their own family. Then you got the popular kids who have to be seen and shown off. It may not be just from their prettiest, or even their intelligence, it may just be having a relationship with the biggest drug dealer in the city. Quadir, is the drug dealers name. To him Gena is the one. All the other girl's don't mean nothing to him as he say's. He makes a lot of money. Everyone wants someone that makes money. Quadir makes it the illegal way. That isn't always the way to go necessarly there is other ways to make money. THE RIGHT WAY.
In Quadir's eyes, he's been looking for Gena for awhile. He has secrets but doesn't tell Gena. Gena is suppose to be his girlfriend, why he doesn't tell her things, things that she should know before she starts falling in love with him. Gena has a family and so does Quadir. They abandon what they have to go on a vacation. Isn't quite a vacation when things get hectic on the other part of the city. If you were Gena would you think about the consequences that you would have if you started a relationship with a drug dealer?

True TO THE GAME

True to the Game by TERRI WOODS pg 1- pg 132

My impressions of the book so far is that it's a good book. True to the Game is thrilling and exciting. You would never think of what happened would have happened. How the author wrote the book it helps you to get into the book and help you understand he book better. By the author writing how she does, you can really put yourself into the characters place and there situations. The book isn't about older people that are out of my range but kids that are in my age bracket. By the kids being in my age bracket it helps you relate to the kids and there situations. I can't relate to the book but people I know can relate to the book . Page after page it gets more and more exciting. I can't wait to flip the next page to see what happens next. This book is better than I thought it was going to be. The book really tells the truth about the real "Players" in the book. What the people in the real world on the street do.

Group Response

The group chose Young Adult literature because we were really unable to agree on a different genre. One wanted this genre others wanted that.We just argued about a genre. By picking this genre we would have a better variety of books to choose from. All the people in the group like different kinds of books. The young adult literature genre we have a bigger variety than the other genres.

We think that people read this genre because the books that are young adult literature can appear to us to be true. Even though they are fiction books they still feel like they are real. Young adult literature fiction books are basically going on in everyday life even though they are not true, you can compare them to real situations.

It's humanity that it provides is there heart and their brain. Some people can relate to fiction books. When they see a title or read the back of a book they might feel like that is the right book for them. There may be a young adult book that might not catch their eye right away but when they read the book the might like it.

I didn't know that this book made reference to The Blizzard of 77.  I can't believe you were in 4th grade for that Thanksgiving blizzard where all the kids got stuck at school.  I remember having seniors write about it happening during their sophomore year.  Man I'm getting old.  I remember having off school for a week for the Blizzard of 85.  Good times.  On a side note, I have to get off my butt and read some Connie Porter.

Shante - 3/5 Responses
I need you to talk about the book more specifically.  That last response reeks of b(ad) s(tuff).  You have to keep up with the work.

Brittany - 5/5 Responses
Brittany, sounds like Jessica is under a lot of pressure, most of it self inflicted.  You're kind of overworking yourself by telling all that plot.  Stick to the questions.   They'll help you focus.

Chinese Handcuffs By: Chris Crutcher

In my story the characterization of the characters was great and well put by the Chris Crutcher. While reading Chinese Handcuffs Chris really made it seems as if I knew Dillon and Jennifer all my life. In the prologue when Chris was telling about Dillon and his track meet it made me seem as if I was there. Like when he said " He tear off his gogles and hands them to stacy, poised with the bicycle and his gym short, which he pulls on over the wet suit as she hands him his reeboks. The socks are a little hard to get on over his wet feet, and he loses some time drying them. Chris Cruthcher has a nact for describing good characterictics

All-Bright Court

As we all know my book setting was near Buffalo in Lacawana New York 1977. In 1977 the huge blizzard had hit in buffalo so this means it also hit Lacawana because there that close. Last year in 2006 we had a bad storm also that just nocked most of the power out And when I was in fourth grade the same happened but just with alot of snow. There has always been terriable weather in Buffalo.
One of the conflicts that happened in my book that relate to my life was when Sam had to meet his son Mikey after school to help him through the snow. The blizzard in 1977 was so bad that Mikey couldnt really walk through it so he feel and alot of snow fail on top of him. So his father came to his rescue and pulled him out the snow and took him home. The same thing happened to me in the fourth grade after school when I was walking home. The only thing different is my mother didnt pull me out the snow but she draged me home.

Jennifer's Character

Also in my story I have another character her name is Jennifer she's not the main character but she a big part of the story. Jennifer is a basketball star everyone thinks she's the best in the state but she has to defend that honor against there rival school Wakefield and there star point guard Renee Halfmoon. So far during my story I seen Jennifer evolve into a better basketball player and a better person. Events such as how when her grandfather passed away she took it hard but she did not let that change her life. Jennifer has a lot of things to deal with in her life she tries to protect her little sister from the things her father did to her. Jennifer little sister is to young to understand but Jennifer isn't. She hides what her father did to well but she is evolving to rise above that and become better at everything she do.

Dillon's Character

In my story Chinese Handcuffs, so far my main character is Dillon. He is track star but he still have many things he tries to deal with in his life. He have a caring family that love him a lot but as all family's there's downfalls. While reading this book I can tell in character actions that he has evolve through the story a little in what I read. A event that seem to had evolve Dillon was the tragic death of his older brother Preston who committed suicide by shooting himself. Such things of this nature is what change an character. Since the death of his brother Dillon tries to use his brother mistakes and tries to become a better person in life. Dillon get his inspiration for playing sports and being great at it because he don't want to see his life crumble as his brother did. This is what evolve characters!

All-Bright Court

There are good and bad things that happens in the book I read. A situation was when Sam's son Mikey wanted to know where babies come from. Mikey ased his parents and they they told him about the birds and the bees and Mikey really didnt get it so he asked his girl friend about it. When Mikey asked her she said Ill show you. So this means two young children lost both of there virginity at the age of eight years old. This situation is also even more sad because I feel that the little girl had to malested at maybe even a young age from having sex.
I am very puzzeled and confused because I feel that maybe Mikey's parents could of explained sex better to his child than he did and told him how bad it was and how un-safe it was for a boy his age. If they would of told him that maybe Mikey would of said no to the little girl and told her some new information she didnt know about to prevent her from doing the same so young. Im also puzzeled and confused because I wanted to know where were the parents when all this was happening and thinking of if it was really the parent's fault.

Random Family 5

How do characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes?Characters change throughout the story because of many events. Coco who is Jessica's sister-in-law has changed dramatically. She goes from having Cesar ( who is Jessica's brother ) has her boyfriend to falling in love with him after only being with him for a couple of months. Coco plans her whole life out with Cesar. Cesar isn't the best man to be with because he is involved in drugs and gangs. He thinks he can trust his gang members but he thought wrong. Before he gets put in jail unexpectantly he gets Coco pregnant. They face they face the matters that Coco is pregnant and keep the child and take care of it. After Coco has her first baby, Mercedes, Cesar is running around with other girls. Coco should have just let him go right then and there.

When Coco finds out that Cesar is messing around with other girls, Coco thinks it's okay and does the same. Soon after he's put in jail, Coco gets pregnant again but it's not by Cesar. Coco changes her ways and tries to hide that she isn't pregnant from Cesar, but people talk and he found out. While he's in jail they write letters to each other and Cesar isn't to happy about Coco, but Coco doesn't really care because Cesar is locked in jail. What can she do when her baby daddy is in jail? Nothing.

Cesar gets out of jail and still doesn't change his ways. Coco tries to move on but she can't resist Cesar. She ends up pregnant again by Cesar and few months pass and Cesar's back in jail. What can she really do with him? He is in and out of jail and not doing nothing for the babies he has. Coco on her own finds a place to stay with her children. Places were she has stayed were comfortable for her. So she looks for better places. Weeks later she finds a man who wants to be with her and her children not just her. Coco looks at him like he is ridiculous but accepts his offer. Moving far away from her old activities and habits and starts herself a new life. By her babies father being locked up in jail made her realize that she doesn't need him. He isn't worth nothing, because she raised her children by herself . Nobody really helped her at her young age.

All- Bright Court

Have you ever loved your character so much that you actually wanted to ask them a question about themselves? If so then you should probably read this book. The character that I want to a question is Sam.I would ask him what made him such a strong person such as going so hard for what he believes in. For example what made him adopt the little and go through all that trouble and hard work for that little girl. I would like to know so I can be more encouraged and inspired. I felt that maybe his pass from going through the same type of experience that the little girl went through when he was growing up could have been the reason. But I wont be able to find out if since the character is just make believe thats why I like non-fiction movies and books.

Random family 4

The book is very interesting. This book can relate to many girls in the society today. Most girls want to have a boyfriend, get tattoos, go partying, and having sex. Why is that? To me personally to fit in. Jessica has to face terrible consequences for messing with a boy who she says she is in love with. She said that about a couple of her boyfriends that she had in the book. The one that she stays with is tatted allover body. 6 tattoos in his honoring. That is not something that looks cute. There not married, don't have any kids together, they just have sex together and she lives in his house. Jessica doesn't have a job. She thinks that every time she needs some money, that her boy George gone give her money all the time. Jessica has 3 three kids that she doesn't even take care of. Her mother and a girl named Milagro she calls her friend watch her kids. Having 3 kids didn't change the way she thought or took care of them.

Boy George makes a lot of money, but not the legal way. The way he makes it is buy selling crack, heroin, and weed. He has a few mils that he works out of to get his drugs transported. His ex- girl friends work for him, his boys, and some of his family members. Later Jessica starts working for boy George in one of his mills. Jessica is his girl but boy George has many other girls. They use codes to talk about there drugs . One day when Jessica was talking in code over the phone, she did not realize that her phone was tapped. Boy George got caught and Jessica was accused but never put in jail.

Months later Jessica was caught and put in jail. Now she never will be able to see her children. She was away from her family, but soon she realized what she was doing was awful. That the wasn't the way she had to live.

Random Family

The motivation that Jessica has is other girls in the book. When Jessica gets around her friends and they dress better than her , or there boyfriends look better than hers she has to go out and get clothes and a better looking boyfriend. A boyfriend she doen't even need she goes out and looks for one. A world without biys to her is like she has nothing else to do. When her mom finds a good, nice, boyfriend Jessica has to make sure that her boyfriend is better.

Growing up in a poor part of the city makes Jessica want to be better than everyone else. Just because she lives were she lives doen't mean that she can't dress nice or have the hottest jewerly, or even the cutest boyfriend. She only cares about herself it seems like. If she was alone and no boy would want to be around her she might go crazy.

Motivation in her eyes is being better than everybody else. When one has something that she doesn't, next thing you know she's out getting that thing that she really doesn't need. Why is she like this? Only she knows. chool doesn't matter to her but when she gets busted and locked for a while her attitude changes towards everything.

The Allure of the West

<i>Into the Wild</i>, Jon Krakauer, pgs 144-207 (end)
<i>Death of a Salesman</i>, Arthur Miller, pgs 1-97

So, I finished <i>Into the Wild</i> and started rereading a book that I'm studying with my AP Literature class.  As I read the first act of the play I was struck by the similarity between Chris McCandless and many of the characters from <i>Death of a Salesman</i>.  The main character of this story, Willy Loman frets over a missed opportunity to accompany his older brother to Alaska to make money. Instead he is 60 and stuck in a dead end sales job.  Interestingly enough, Willy's father abandoned <i>him</i> as a child to also seek fortune in Alaska.  In a weird twist, Willy is disappointed in his son Biff because he is constantly seeking work outside of the norm of the day.  He's worked on cattle farms and other jobs that Willy does not respect.  Biff explains that he likes these jobs because he's not stuck inside at a desk and can be out in the open air.

In American culture the west has always been symbolic of the open frontier, a vast unexplored wilderness where a man could make his living outside of the realm of laws and societal constraints.  It's interesting that these two books, written 50 years apart, have such similar themes.

Does anyone else know of any characters who seek a life outside of society?  Anyone have a friend or family member who constantly wants to go out on the open road?  What do you think drives a person to feel like this?

All Bright Court By Connie Porter

I am pulled towards the character called Mikey who plays the little boy in the story. I can relate to him because everybody be dogging him and dont think to ask him about his back round, and the bad thing about it is he is a little boy he's not even a teenager he hasn't even experienced life yet. Connecting this back into my life I was talk about when i was a little girl because i was fat i was skinny like the rest of my friends. People would dog me make me fill little, i can jus imgain wat that little boy going there. being talked aboput isnt good in everybody should be able to see where i am comming from because some point in time in everbody life they have been talked. in they know it hurt deep down inside.

Chinese Handcuffs By: Chris Crutcher

My book is about these two student athlete's who are friends. One is a female name Jennifer Lawless and she play basketball, and the other is a male name Dillon Hemingway and he run track. They both are fighters, fighting to push away the pain in their lives. Only together can they survive, look horror straight in the eye, and pull themselves away from the wrongs that have been done to them.

Thursday, December 6, 2007

My book was written by Coonnie Porter as a novel called All- Bright Court. The book is about a young black man trying to find him self who actually live near Buffalo,New York. But in a colorfully painted but crumbling housing project near Buffalo, steel mill. This novel is full of wisdom, grace and poetry. In this novel it had alot of diffirent characters such as Sam, Mary Kate and Mikey. My favorite character was Sam because he didnt just remind me of myself but others that I see or be around that I understand as a person. What my grandmother use to always say about me was she's not stupid, selfish or bad but she's just mis-understood and thats the same way I feel about Sam.
When you read a book do the character seem real and believable? Are you able to relate all their predicaments? And do they ever start to remind you of yourself? My answer is yes i feel their is actually a real and believable person because I be so into the story or book that I feel that the whole book is real. The charater Sam diffinently reminds me of myself because I feel I can relate to him such as children life responsibilities and even family.

All Bright Court by Connie Porter

Hi my name is shante the novel i am reading is All Bright Court By Connie Porter.
This novel is about how a little boy is being raised in a society where he really does know anything and/or how to take on challenges in his life.
This story cought my attention because this young boy named Mikey is being faced with so many challenges at a young age. i have been faced with many challenges in my life were i wanted to give up. but what really inspired me was how mikey this little boy never gave up. he showed me that things happen for a reason, and that you should never give up because you giving up just shows that your a failer. I dont want to have to grow up like his mom telling my children i was a failer

Random Fmily, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc pgs1-136

The book Random Family has characters that people can relate too. Jessica one of the main characters, is an intellingent person but doesn't use it the right way. Jessica and her family live in Bronx, New York. The family consist of a mother 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Jessica and Cesar are the closest family members. Growing up in the ghetto was hard for them but they got through it and mangaged to survive. With not a lot of money, Jessica dressed as best as she could, so when coming outside all the boys would look at her.

Most girls want to be the ones that get looked at every time they see a good looking boy. Every girl wants to be loved by some boy. All girls want to be the one on top. No other girl can have there man. They don't want there man to be shared.

It all started when she was younger and older men started falling for her. She was young so she aint really know what to do. When she had a boyfriend she had to sleep with him, if not they she felt not loved by him. When her boyfriends would leave her because they found another girls. She didn't care,as long as she got to have sex with them it was o.k. When she was in the 9th grade she got pregnant, but it wasn't by her boyfriend Victor. Jessica was a slezy girl. Having sex was always on her mind. The boys she told that they were the father of her child didn't take no responsibility to take care of no child.

When your 14 nobody wants to take care of no children. Kids are into clubbing, going out, having fun, they aren't ready for no big responsibilities at that age. You see it now out on the street girls getting pregnant not just having one or two kids but 3 or 4.

The characters in this book are believable. I can relate to their predicaments. The extent that this book reminds me of characters is quite well and I can relate too.

Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer Pages: 1-144

So, the book I'm reading is about this early twenty something kid who
is pretty alienated. It's a nonfiction book, and since I haven't
summed it up yet in a previous response, it's about a kid who is
searching for meaning in life and seeks this meaning by exploring.
At the beginning of the book we find out that he ends up dying in the
middle of Alaska to exposure.

Even though I think I'm supposed to, I'm having a really hard time
identifying with the main character, Chris McCandless. I look at
the cover and there's this picture of Emile Hirsch portraying
McCandless. He's a good looking kid, and he's kind of sitting in this
"top of the world" type dominant pose. The author seems to really
identify with the character, and spends a couple of chapters relating
his own similar experiences. And McCandless is seemingly the rugged,
individualistic antihero that Americans celebrate.

But, I can't get into him, and I think it's because I'm a parent
now. I see the way this kid abandoned his parents, went off into the
middle of nowhere, took chances, didn't write home, and espoused his
theories on the way life works to whomever would listen, and I'm
like, "dude...call your mom, dad and sister. They're worried sick."
The kid is kind of portrayed as this spiritual, deep Thoreau quoting
prophetic figure, but he just strikes me as naive and self centered.
I don't know what I'd do if I was his parent. I would be devastated
if my son took off after graduating college and just disappeared.
It's really rather sad.

(By the way, if you're wondering, this response is to the 7th bullet
under character. The total length of this response is 279 words. I
summed up the book to start because I figured you'd need that
information, but then I really tried to stick to talking about
whether or not I identified with the main character and why.)

I dont have a book to read yet. I know im wrong and will get one from the school library as soon as possible.

Random Family

The title of the book is Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc. This novel is about a boy and a girl who grow up in a ghetto in the Bronx. The Jessica and Cesar, who are brother and sisters, who are trying to outrun their destinies.

I like about the book is that Jessica and Cesar are my age, so I can relate to what is going on. It gives in detail how things have happened so far. How Jessica doesn't feel loved by anyone. By her saying this it makes me want to get into the book even more.

Your 1st Post!

Today in class we will be posting to our blogs. To keep things simple, this

Welcome

Hello folks. I just wanted to give you a hearty welcome to the
blogosphere (the world of weblogs, according to my widget dictionary).

I'm going to send you more meaty information in the next few days
(right now I'm testing out the "mail to blogger" option I told some
of you about today).

But for now, I want to talk to you about grammar and conventions.
These are blogs for my English class, and I expect you to follow the
rules of standard English as best as you can. Some of our previous
rm305 blog discussions were replete with mistake after mistake. You
may IM your friends and write on Myspace one way, but on these blogs
we are going to assume a more academic diction.

Thanks for the help. If you have any questions, let me know.
