Little Soldier By: Bernard Ashley

Life in Africa Pg: 1-100

My Character Kaninda seems like he is a real person. It seems as if I can feel his pain and grief. I know that I can't relate to Kaninda predicament but I know others that can. Such as the children in Sierra Leone who were drugged and forced to amputate limbs of people in their own communities even their own families. Kaninda is motivated by ethnic hatred and the desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and sister. This oversimplifies the thoughts of child soldiers in Africa. Over 100,000 children in recent years have been kidnapped and forcibly enrolled into conflicts in Angola, Congo, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. They make up over half of the fighting forces in these countries. As children they are considered cheap, expendable, and easily forced into mindless obedience. Do you believe that children should be forced into war for those reasons mentioned in the passage?

Can you imagine being a child in war? I think Blood Diamond did a pretty good job depicting the horrors that such a situation put families through. It is a crazy situation.
